Black Choker: 3 Easy Ways To DIY

Instantly update your outfit with the style statement of the season: the choker. Pair with an off-the-shoulder top and your favorite spring lip for a look that will take you from brunch to the bar.  

Black chokers are everywhere and while this might not be our first time rocking the trend, we’re so into it. Today we’re showing you three ways to whip up your own wicked-cool collars. The trick here is to get crafty with what you already have. (One Honest Beauty swears by her shopping bag-handle-turned-choker. Seriously!)

SUEDE + SILVER

The ’90s get a modern update with a touch of metal. If you’re more of a golden gal, feel free to swap out the silver — any jump ring will work.

1. Cut two pieces of suede string, each about 16 inches in length.
2. Loop one piece of string through the jump ring and pull it through until the ring falls in the middle. Fold the string in half and secure with a single knot.
3. Repeat step 2 with the other piece of string and secure so that it falls opposite the first knot.
4. Place the ring in the center of your neck and tie into place.

*Honest Beauty Tip: Wear an extra jump ring as a midi ring (see below). You won’t be quite so heartbroken when it manages to go missing, as midi rings always manage to do.

NIFTY NYLON

Despite best efforts, this winter basic is bound to snag. Upcycle your old tights by turning them into a (sneaky) chic collar.

1. Scour your sock drawer for pair of black tights.
2. Snip off a leg and wrap it around your neck. Secure with a knot, then carefully tuck in the ends so that it forms one uniform band around your neck.

*Honest Beauty Tip: Save the other leg for backup or make a quick headband.  

(NOT-SO-)BASIC BLACK

Already running late? This neckband is pretty much a one-step wonder. Just grab your favorite ribbon and go. (Bonus points for velvet, satin or lace.)  

1. Snip off a piece of ribbon; ours was about a yard in length.
2. Tie it on and you’re done. If you’d like, you can display the ends in an artfully tied bow at the nape of your neck.

*Honest Beauty Tip: Dab clear nail polish along the cut edge of your ribbon to keep it from fraying.
